Episode Transcription

Hello, and welcome to this new show climate with Kiana. This is a podcast all about solutions, climate solutions, sustainability, clean energy, joy, and justice. I'm your host, Kiana Michaan, a climate justice and clean energy advocate. based in New York City on unceded Lenape land. I've spent the last few years working with clean energy companies and environmental non profits on solutions to the climate crisis, which is the greatest existential threat of our time. But hope is not lost.

Hope is different than optimism, in that it's not saying I'm sure everything's going to be great, but it's really like I'm going to act anyway, and I'm going to work toward what I know is just and healthy regardless of exactly how the outcome is or even if I don't get to see the outcome.

There is a lot we can do to prevent worsening climate impacts over time. In fact, the solutions are already happening here and now.

It's really exciting because very intersectional and I started thinking about how all these other people from other disciplines and all these different skill sets can contribute to clean energy and decarbonization of our nation in different ways.

We are in the midst of a clean energy transition on a massive scale and policy, technology, community, and nature based solutions continue to be implemented and expanded.

There are just so many brilliant minds that are trying to answer the question, how can we rapidly and equitably transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, and we just need to push.

Over the episodes ahead, I hope to share stories of passionate people working tirelessly on these solutions.

So we really need to be intentional about, you know, what are the barriers that are getting in the way of us? Entering this field, what continues to keep Latinx representation so low and figure out how to challenge that and how to advocate for changes.

And explore topics including energy systems.

An energy democracy is all about shifting away from these centralized, top down energy systems, allowing communities to shape their own energy future, prioritizing renewable sources, and benefiting from the economic opportunities associated with clean energy.

solar policy, eco womanism, beauty justice.

The reality is people can't assume that the products they're using are inherently safe,

climate and mental health and so much more. All through a framework of joy and justice  because every environmental issue is a justice issue.

There's this leadership crisis that's happening. where the folks at the forefront of this issue are not really represented. I don't see myself represented and it's impacting us worst and first.  So if I want to be a part of any type of social impact or social change work, then I have to dedicate myself to climate because climate connects with everything.

And for me, Joy and climate optimism are critical tools for environmental work.

Joy is crucial to sustaining us. This work is so emotionally taxing, so we need joy and pleasure. We must be able to enjoy this work. Otherwise, we'll burn out before we ever get to make the difference that we seek.

And so even in the midst of these overwhelmingly challenging world circumstances, I believe that it is our responsibility to understand the intersectional nature of the global climate crisis in order to create truly just solutions, all while operating from a place of radical joy.

So join me each week in an exploration of environmental challenges and solutions. Let's cultivate hope and joy by exploring these climate solutions and visioning new possibilities together. See you in the episodes ahead. And until then. Be well and be joyous.
